GIMHAE NATIONAL MUSEUM
ExhibitionsWorld Heritage is the UNESCO designation for cultural heritage of outstanding universal value to humanity. The Baekje Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is comprised of eight archaeological sites in the cities of Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan, all three of which served at one point as the kingdom’s capital. The sites illustrate a Baekje culture marked by a harmony of urban planning, architecture, art, and religion.
Consisting of seven distinct cemeteries, the Gaya Tumuli became the sixteenth Korean serial property to be inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2023. The seven cemeteries are the Daeseong-dong Tumuli in Gimhae, Marisan Tumuli in Haman, Okjeon Tumuli in Hapcheon, Jisan-dong Tumuli in Goryeong, Songhak-dong Tumuli in Goseong, Yugok-ri and Durak-ri Tumuli in Namwon, and Gyo-dong and Songhyeon-dong Tumuli in Changnyeong. The tomb complexes have been recognized for their outstanding universal value in bearing testimony to the Gaya Confederacy, a polity that coexisted with its neighbors while maintaining a distinctly autonomous horizontal political system. They are considered important evidence of the diversity found among early East Asian civilizations.
This special exhibition invites you to experience the Baekje and Gaya cultures that developed their unique societies through active cultural exchanges.
